Private Banjo Lessons

I welcome student into my home for private instruction to help them reach their next level. Beginner to advanced.

Beginning banjo
My plan for (DIY) beginners is to tackle the basics, develop good habits and work with you on learning your first tune within a couple of lessons, depending on your ability. I have a very simple and surprisingly successful approach to making this happen with some standard country tunes you would recognize. $45 an hour, usually every couple of weeks.

Novice - intermediate players
I can help you move up a notch or two from Scruggs to melodic and single string exercise playing note for note some fun Texas swing, Irish and American fiddle tunes including New Grass stuff. Work on improvisation and solo neck strategies. $55 an hour, perhaps once a month.

With an advanced player I act more as a consultant. Advanced can mean many things, but remember that Gershwin took piano lessons to the day he died. I still take lessons occasionally with the masters. You could always use another point of view and another advanced player’s insight. $75 an hour, maybe at most once a quarter.

Chester County 5 String Banjo Player
For Recording, Parties and Gigs

A player for many decades, I am versed in bluegrass of course, but also in swing, jazz, blues and other American roots. Self taught from the early years, since then I have taken private and group lessons with American Banjo Masters such as Tony Trischka, Peter Wernick, Bill Keith and Mark Johnson.

I currently play with a swing sextet: 3 Gibson mandolins, swing fiddle and gypsy style guitarist. Sometimes we have a tap dancer and guest vocalists. In this setting I play the 5 string banjo. We play American songbook jazz standards, big band and early century swing. Its really fun, and always a challenge for chord structure and improvisation.

Here is a short list of some astounding players:

If you are in the tristate (PA, DE and NJ) and looking for where to play with others, and other connections, you MUST connect with Doc Pollack list of Bluegrass Jams.. Big thanks to Ed, he holds this area together.
